Recycling your Technology – How to Reuse, and Recycle

I can’t remember how long I have been using an iPhone, but I feel it has been a part of my life for some considerable time. With three grown-up children, all heavily into technology, the turnover of smartphones in our household is pretty high, which can be an expensive necessity.

Over the years technology trade-in and refurbishment sites have been a useful find, not only for fighting e-waste but also for giving expertly restored devices a second life.

Backmarket.com is the leading marketplace for refurbished devices. They take great care in selecting sellers to make sure the products sold in the marketplace have all been properly cleaned, repaired, inspected, and tested to make sure your purchase performs like new.

Having recently viewed their website, I was thrilled to find and ‘old friend” of mine, the refurbished  iPhone XR. Although it is not the latest iPhone model, it still performs well for a phone over 4 years and is still one of the best iPhones by price on the market in 2023. For my own requirements, the iPhone XR is the perfect phone if your preference, like mine, is a larger screen, and you also crave an extended battery life.

We all have our favourites, however, when making a new phone purchase, whether new or refurbished, there are several things you may wish to consider, after all, it’s going to be your personal style statement and constant companion – until the next one!

Camera Quality – Are you buying your phone specifically for photography? The Iphone XR pictures are pretty good, as you would expect as this is due to the Apple colour science, that helps images look true to life. However, the latest models of phones, these days do have additional lenses offering exceptional picture quality and abilities.

Work out your storage needs – If you’re already an iPhone user, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and see how much you’re using now, and for what. This will be a guide for your next phone purchase.

Screen Size – are you looking for portability, or something with a larger screen?

Performance and Battery Life – The Iphone XR performs well thanks to the A12 Bionic chip, which allows you to multitask and play games if you wish. If you’re planning to install a lot of apps, it would be advisable to get a phone with adequate memory (at least 128GB).

Buy Sim-Free – unless you’re already tied into a network contract with an upgrade, consider buying your iPhone outright, giving you more options regarding your choice of network.

The next time you are looking for a phone replacement, think about recycling. Recycling helps us all by conserving the environment.

Many phones contain dangerous chemicals that can have adverse health effects, which are slowly released into the environment as a phone breaks down. Often, electronic devices are burned for disposal when they’re not properly recycled releasing toxic metals into the environment and polluting it.
