Cashews as they should be…
Cashew nuts have a buttery, sweet, and salty taste, an unmistakable shape, and they are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. They grow on cashew nut trees, which are native to subtropical climates.
Although cashews are one of the lowest-fiber nuts, they are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These include vitamins E, K, and B6, along with minerals like copper, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, iron, and selenium, all of which are important for maintaining good bodily function. Making the perfect snack for any time of day.
Although here in the UK we are generally used to our cashew nuts, beige in colour with the skins off, head to Vietnam, where many of the cashews on our supermarket shelves come from, and those being eaten by people on the streets look altogether very different.
In Vietnam the cashew nuts are preferred roasted with their skins on. So, why miss out on the tastiest part of these savoury snacks. Having devoured a whole tub with friends over the Christmas period, I for one have certainly been converted.
By wood roasting cashews with their skin on, and adding a touch of salt, the nuts are given a delicious rich flavour. Still retaining the taste of cashews that we all know and love, but adding an extra level of taste, this delicious method of preparing the nuts quickly makes you appreciate why this is the favoured way to eat them in their country of origin.
Best enjoyed as a healthy afternoon snack or accompanied by your favourite drink as an appetizer, if you enjoy nuts then these are a must. Just be warned, once you’ve had one they’re very hard to put down!!
